What is Cruise Roosting?

Sometimes the best thing to do in port is… not much at all.

Cruise roosting is the fine art of staying aboard—or coming back early—while everyone else heads ashore.

No excursion. No race to the gangway. No feeling that you have to squeeze every possible experience out of every possible port.

Just you, the ship, and a wonderfully uncrowded day.

Around here, we call that roosting.

How Cruise Roosting Got Its Name

After enough Caribbean cruises, something started to happen.

We'd arrive at ports we'd visited before. Sometimes several times before. We'd look at the excursion list, look at each other, and realize there wasn't anything ashore we particularly needed to do.

But there was a very nice ship sitting right underneath us.

So we stayed aboard.

And we discovered one of cruising's poorly kept secrets: a ship in port can be a pretty wonderful place to spend the day.

Fewer people. Shorter lines. Quiet decks. Plenty of places to sit. A leisurely lunch. Maybe a book by the pool. Maybe a walk around the ship. Maybe absolutely nothing productive whatsoever.

We started doing it more often.

Eventually, it needed a name.

Roosting.

In August 2024, we introduced the term to other cruisers in a post called The Joys of Cruise Roosting. We wondered whether anyone else cruised this way.

Apparently, we weren't alone.

“I have found my people!”

“Fellow rooster checking in!!!”

“Thank you. Now I know what to call it!”

“Never heard it called ‘roosting,’ but I like it.”

One cruiser put it particularly well:

“The ship is our destination.”

Yep. They got it.

So, What Exactly Counts as Roosting?

There are no rules.

Stay aboard for the entire port day? You're roosting.

Go ashore for a couple of hours, wander around, grab a coffee and come back before lunch? Roosting.

Skip one port but explore the next one? Absolutely.

The point isn't that you should never get off the ship.

The point is that you don't have to.

New port you've always wanted to visit? Go explore it.

Favorite beach calling your name? Go.

Amazing excursion? Have a fantastic time.

Been here five times already?

Well...

There is a suspiciously empty pool deck upstairs.

Why Roost?

Because cruise ships are pretty great when thousands of your closest friends temporarily leave them.

Port days can mean quieter pools, open loungers, uncrowded public spaces, leisurely meals and a completely different atmosphere aboard.

Experienced cruisers also know something that can take a few cruises to figure out:

You don't get extra vacation points for being exhausted.

You don't have to book an excursion in every port.

You don't have to see everything.

You don't have to come home needing a vacation from your vacation.

Sometimes cruising can simply be about enjoying the place you've already paid to be.
